Personal Interets Split Imo Council Chairmen.... As ISIEC Prepares For LG Fresh Polls

Some of the 27 Local Government Chairmen sacked from office by Governor Rochas Okorocha in June 2011 may have given up the fight to return to the Council Seats.

Some of the Chairmen mainly of the opposition PDP in Imo State are said to have entered into individual private negotiations with key officials of the Okorocha Administration seeking for what a source described as ‘individual political settlement of the feud’

Some of them are said to be negotiating for Sole Administrator position of their respective councils under the Okorocha Administration. Another group is said to be pushing strongly for the payment of their allowances and salaries as the only basis they will cease the battle for their seats.

This posture of these Chairmen is said to have weakened the entire group of the Chairmen operating under the aegis of Association of Local Government Chairmen (ALGON) who were firm and solid as a group pushing for their reinstatement as Council Chairmen following a Court Ruling which re instated them as duly elected.

This blog was told that those negotiating with the Okorocha led APGA Government in the State are said to be fed up with the war of attrition with the Governor.

They are also furious at the leadership of their group which are said to be making huge sums of money from PDP heavyweights in the State including a high ranking member of the House of Representatives from the State who is taking up the bills in executing the fight for their reinstatement.

A source in Imo the State Government confirmed this development, but said there is nothing unusual if some of the Council Chairmen decide to negotiate.

It will be recalled that the Federal Court of Appeal, Owerri overturned the judgement of a lower court, by reinstating the Council Chairmen which were sacked by Governor Okorocha.  Despite the Court Ruling, the Government insists that the tenure of the council chairmen expired on August 8th, 2012 .

Based on the declaration of the State Government, the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), the state controlled electoral umpire, has scheduled April 27, 2013 as new date for fresh polls to elect new Local Government Chairmen and Councillors
