Senator Anyanwu Backs Autonomy For Local Governments

Autonomy for the Local Governments in the federation has been described as a vital tool that will ensure that the dividends of democracy sip to the grassroots.

Speaking in Owerri on how she voted on the floor of the Red chambers of the senate in Abuja on issues raised for amendment in the Constitution of the Federal Repbulic of Nigeria, senator Chris Anyanwu said that her decision to vote in favour of autonomy for the LGS stem from the fact that the Local Governments in the country has failed in carrying out its social responsibilities.

She said democracy can only serve the people better if the Lgs are autonomous and cease to be a rubber stamp of the executives. According to her, this will enable the LGs function effectively.
She also made a case for financial autonomy for the House of Assembly, stating with the autonomous status of these two vital organs of governance, the nation’s resources will trickle down to the masses.

Senator Anyanwu who represents Imo East Senatorial district at the senate, said she voted in accordance to the wishes and expectations of the masses as encapsulated in the fallout of the interaction with the people when senators interacted with their constituents prior to the debate on the review of the constitution.

“Based on that interaction we had with our people, we were expected to reflect on the stand of the people. Therefore I voted on the side of Imo people” she stated.

She revealed she voted yes on section 29 of the Constitution on child protection to eliminate child molestation.
On the situation in Rivers State, Senator Anyanwu said the national assembly resolved to take over the functions and duties of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
