NJEMANZE(OYIGA) |
The immediate
past Mayor of Owerri Zone, Chief Gibson Achonwa Njemanze (Oyiga) has reacted to
comments credited to Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha that he
(Rochas) gave him N2 million naria monthly for his personal use during his tenure.
The former Mayor said such monies were given
to Owerri Mayorial office for various assignments assigned to Owerri Mayorial
office by Governor Okorocha during his tenure as Mayor and not for personal use
as insinuated by the Governor.
He also
maintained that he decided to leave the All Progressives Congress, APC for the
PDP for personal reasons and to actualize his political aspiration and
expressed gratitude to him for giving him the opportunity to serve the State.
The Statement
signed by the former Mayor’s Media Aide,
Innocent Onyeukwu, reads:
“The
attention of the former Mayor of Owerri Zone, Chief Gibson Achonwa Njemanze
(Oyiga) has been drawn to a newspaper publication credited to his Excellency
wherein he purportedly alleged that he gave N25 Million naira and another N2
million naira monthly to the former Mayor to sustain him and his office.
“Oyiga does not intend to join issues
with the State Governor as he still holds him in high esteem being the number
one citizen of the State.
“It is however important that certain
clarifications are made on the issues raised by His Excellency, concerning the
tenure of office of Chief Njemanze, the former Mayor of Owerri.
“The Governor released N25 million naira,
being 25% of the N100 million naira he promised each of the three Mayors of
Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe Zones to carry out various assignments and
responsibilities he assigned to them.
“Oyiga prudently managed the N25 million naira
to carry out the duties His Excellency outlined for Owerri Mayorial office which
among other things include; decongestion of Owerri, funding of the operations
of various Task Forces constituted by the Owerri Mayorial office with the
approval of His Excellency, etc.
“Other details on how the monies were expended
were documented and had His Excellency’s approval.
“It is important to point that prior to his resignation
as Mayor of Owerri Zone, the balance of N75 million naria was not released to
the office.
“The monthly N2 million naria advanced to
Owerri Mayorial Office was used to run office operations and a monthly wage
bill of N1.3 million naira and not as largesse to Chief Njemanze for his
personal use.
“Before his appointment as Mayor of Owerri
Zone, Chief Njemanze had chains of businesses which span across shipping,
estate management, haulage and transportation. He still operates his businesses
till date.
“However, his decision to leave the All
Progressive Congress, APC remains a personal decision.
“Chief Njemanze believes that the PDP is the
best political platform where he will realize his political aspiration.
“While he wishes His Excellency, Governor
Rochas Okorocha well in his determination to t actualize his Rescue mission agenda,
he also remains thankful to His Excellency for giving him the opportunity to
serve the State.
