In a keenly contested
election which took place in Khartoum, Sudan on Monday, Hajia Aliyu defeated
other contestants and also won a run off to defeat her closest challenger from
Algeria.
In her short speech
after emerging victorious in the election, she promised to restore internal democracy,
competence, confidence, the rule of law and transparency in the administration of
women in all African political parties and in the affairs of African women.
The inauguration of the
newly elected executives of the council will take place on Tuesday in Khartoum,
Sudan at central Africa time.
She will represent the council
at a summit in Russia later this year. 16 African countries took part in the
election.
