Senator Uche Ekwunife has become the first Senator on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC from the South East geo political zone.

Ekwunife announced her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the APC yesterday, January, 8th, 2015, just as the first executive Governor of old Anambra State and former minister for Youth and Sports, Jim Nwobodo also dumped the PDP for the ruling party.

Senator Ekwunife, the erstwhile senator representing Anambra central senatorial district said “it’s better now for me to join the APC.

She told newsmen in Awka that “let the heat be there, I am already on campaigns for my return to the senate to complete my contract with the people of Anambra central district”

She said her programmes for her people under the APC would soon be made public.
Ekwunife was inaugurated as senator in June 2015 but had her election nullified by the Appeal Court in Enugu on December 6, 2015 on grounds of irregularities.

The Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh election in the zone within 90 daysWith her defection to the ruling All Progressive Congress, Senator Ekwunife has become the first senator on the APC platform in the South East geo political zone.

The APC has only two House of Representatives members from the South East and no senator until Ekwnuife defected yesterday.

In a related development, former old Anambra State Governor, Chief Jim Nwobodo has pitched tenth with the APC dumping the PDP.

Nwobodo was a senator of the Federal Repbulic of Nigeria having represented Enugu East between 1999 and 2007.

He was received into the APC at a stakeholders meeting convened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geofrey Onyeama and attended by top APC leaders in the South East.

He defected alongside a former senator, Fidelis Okoro who represented Enugu north and another PDP chieftain, Richard Ozobu.

Nwobodo was said to have received N100 million from the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

He said the monies he received was not for his personal use but to mobilize PDP in the South East for the re- election of then President Goodluck Jonathan in the April 2015 Presidential election.

This Online newspaper had reported that the APC is concerned over its poor presence in the South East. It has one governor and two House members of the House of Representaives.

Last December, we reported that a serving PDP governor is in talks with APC leaders in the region.
