In what appears a move to decimate the grievances of some PDP senators from the South East reportedly opposed to  his appointment as new national chairman of the opposition party, Ali Modu Sherrif yesterday stormed Owerri and Umuahia, Imo and Abia State capitals to interact with party stake-holders.

Sherrif arrived Owerri via Sam Mbakwe International Airport where he was received by the former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives and ex PDP Imo State Governorship candidate, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha.

The former Borno State Governor held meetings with top PDP leaders in the State which was attended by top party chieftains. The Party’s national chair was said to have canvassed for support vowing to lead the opposition party to victory in 2019.

In Umuahia, the Abia State capital, the party’s national chairman said he will return PDP to Aso Rock, Abuja in 2019.
His appointment as the opposition national party chair has generated uproar among critical stakeholders in the party especially South East PDP senators who opposed his appointment.

He however enjoys the strong backing of PDP governors notably Governors Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) are also backing

The party’s national chairman visit to the South East has been interpreted as a move to rally support and possibly douse the grievances of the senators who are aligning with former aides and ministers who served in former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Governors Forum has expressed confidence in the ability of newly appointed National Chairman of PDP Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, to reposition the party and make it more inclusive.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Coordinator of the forum, Mr Osaro Onaiwu in Abuja on Wednesday.

The governors, according to the statement, said the emergence of Sheriff, ex-governor and senator, was one done after careful deliberation given the battle ahead.
“Sheriff is coming on the job with immense wealth of experience and will no doubt use his vast network to rebuild the party.

“He will restore members’ confidence and act as a counterforce to the many antics of the present APC regime.”

The governors urged the new national chairman to avoid all diversionary tactics and work toward uniting all aggrieved members and fashion out modalities to woo new party faithful.

“We urge you to shun all diversionary tactics that might be thrown at you and concentrate on how to bring all aggrieved party members together; as well as fashion out ways to woo new members especially the youths.

“The forum is solidly behind you and will deploy its support to ensure that the shared vision for our party is realised as we prepare for 2019.”

The governors said the situation in the country was an opportunity for Sheriff to show that the PDP remained the only truly national party that could reunite the country.
