Science and Technology Minister, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu says plans are underway to ensure that Nigeria become a large producer of pencils which will create about 400,000 jobs for Nigerians.

The Minister pointed out that raw materials for the production of pencils can be locally sourced in the country.

Onu who spoke at a Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN) phone in Programme Radio Link, said local production of pencils in Nigeria has the capacity to make the country the largest market for the item in the West Africa sub region.

The Minister also announced that his Ministry intends to organize an exhibition to showcase Made in Nigeria goods and encourage innovations by Nigerian geniuses in the area of science and technology.
He unveiled plans by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to revive and encourage home grown technology as a basis to boost national development.

Part of the measures to achieve this feat, according to the Minister, is to establish technology villages in some parts of the country.

Onu built a technology village in Abia State when he was governor of the State between 1992-1993.

The Minister pointed out that there is need to close the gap in technology between Nigeria and other countries, stressing that his ministry will give priority to research in technology and encourage innovation in Nigeria.

He said his Ministry will also ensure that such researches are market driven; pointing out that his visit to China and Indonesia recently strengthened the need for Nigeria to encourage technology transfer through collaboration.

The Minister said on assumption of office, he ensured that each agency under his ministry understood clearly its functions and policy direction of the ministry which is geared towards promoting technological development and innovation in Nigeria.

He revealed that one of the research agencies under the federal ministry of Science and Technology has been saddled with the responsibility to carry out research on renewable energy to boost power supply in the country.

Onu  highlighted the production of biscuits by Federal Institute For Research Oshodi (FIRO) which contain essential vitamins that will promote child growth and aid soldiers to be physically fit during combat operations,

He also explained that soon the Ministry will render 24 hours services in order to be able to respond to request and inquiries by foreign countries on Nigeria’s technological development.
