The Dreaded
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stormed Owerri, the Imo State
capital on Thursday, 11th October, 2012.
The Commission’s operatives were said to have
stormed the office of Imo State Oil Producing Development Commission
(ISOPADEC), a government agency responsible for the management of oil monies
accruable to Imo State as an Oil Producing State.
Some
Newspapers in Owerri reported that the EFCC agents arrested the Chairman of the
Commission, Rev Fr. Ebomuche after meeting some sort of resistance at the entrance
gate of the premises of the Commission. They were said to have also demanded
the whereabouts of the Managing Director of the commission, Chief Emeka Okafor,
who is said to be the man that oversees the day to day running of
ISOPADEC. He was nowhere to be sighted.
However, the Reverend Father cum Chairman was
said to have requested to inform his employers at Government House, Owerri
before he could travel to Abuja with the EFCC agents.
His request
was granted by the agents who went to the seat of government before jetting out
of the Abuja with the ISOPADEC boss.
Several
reasons which range from political to other issues were identified as factors
responsible for the arrest of the Commission’s Chairman. It was reported that
several petitions emanating from leaders and stakeholders of Oil Producing
communities in Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Local Governments may have attracted the
eagle eye of the anti graft agency.
When this blog called from a source at the Commission,
he denied the Chairman was arrested by any law Enforcement Security Agents,
claiming that he travelled to Abuja on an official assignment. Meanwhile
activities were at a low ebb at the commission’s secretariat, along Owerri-
Port Harcourt Road, though workers were sighted going about their normal
business.
