Despite the strong contention by the South East to produce
the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress, APC, the Imo State
Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, in his desperation to be Vice Presidential
Candidate of the party, has dumped the popular aspiration of the South East to produce the party national chairman by
aligning with the South South.
It will be recalled that the South East has been in strong
contention for the position.
However, Okorocha who celebrated his three years in office
in Owerri, yesterday, used the event to attract some APC leaders to the State
to witness the event.
A source revealed that after the ceremony at Imo
International Convention Centre, Owerri, the Governor and his guests retreated
to Government House, Owerri where a meeting was convened by the Imo Governor.
Those who attended
the meeting include Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, former
Bayelsa State, Timipre Silva, National Vice Chairman, (South East), Dr. Anyim
Nyerere, National Organizing Secretary, Osita Izunaso, and some other members of
the national interim executive.
The meeting purportedly zoned the National Chairmanship
position to the South South while the slot of national secretary went to the
North East. Also agreed at the meeting
was to set up sub committees to fine tune the strategies pursuant to realizing
the actualization of the zoning arrangement.
Governor Okorocha’s latest political maneuverings is said to
be part of his grand plan to trade away the national chairmanship position to the
South South to pave way for the realization of his Vice Presidential ambition.
Analysts wonder how
this could be achieved with the South West in strong contention for the
position of Vice President having five
States and more membership in their kitty.
The North is expected to produce the presidential candidate of the
party.
Those believed to be eying the national chairmanship
position include Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu (South East), Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief John
Oyegun, Timipre Silva, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, all from the South South Zone.
