If feelers from the PDP headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja is anything
to by, then the party plans to hold its primaries for its governorship
aspirants in the 36 States of the federation in September, 2014.
There were conflicting signals when the presidential primaries will take
place, but it was gathered that it may not exceed the month of October.
The nation's electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is expected to lift the ban on campaigns in November, 2014.
However, before then, the PDP is expected to hold congresses in States where necessary
before proceeding to delegates’ election that will form an electoral college to
elect party candidates for various positions.
According to a party source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the PDP leadership will meet on
the proposed dates, deliberate on it before it gets to the National Executive
Council, NEC for ratification.
In Imo State, a fixed date for the
party primaries is expected to lead to increased political activities in the
party.
At the moment, reports have it the modalities for the conduct of
delegates is uppermost in the minds of most public office seekers who are expected to
devote so much time wooing the statutory delegates.
