Okorocha Commissions Refurbished Imo State Water Scheme

OTAMMIRI WATER SCHEME

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, Thursday, 14th April, 2016 commissioned the Imo State Water Scheme, Otammiri.

The commissioning is coming after several years water taps in Owerri and environ went dry.

The Otammiri water Scheme was built by the second republic administration of Late Sam Mbakwe.
It supplied water to virtually all localities in Imo State before it collapsed many years ago.

Successive governments failed to revive the scheme.

Since then, Owerri has been worst hit over water supply which has forced many residents to resort to installing boreholes. Sachet water business grew in leaps and bounds since then in the city and beyond.

A visit to the water scheme by INNONEWS.COM in January, 2016 showed that most of the equipments were obsolete as the new concessionaire, Heging Holding Ltd battled to revive most of the engines that were totally in bad shape and archaic .

Okorocha also said that Imolites would get three months of free water from the Scheme and after that, charges would follow, urging residents within the water scheme to guide it to avoid criminals stealing the engines.

Speaking at the commissioning of the water scheme, the Governor urged the people of Imo State to drink the water as it is properly treated.

This newspaper observed that taps are still dry in Owerri main city, though there are reports that taps are running in some areas.
