Power Tussle Dim Imo PDP Ward Congress

Power tussle among key political stakeholders in Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP overshadowed the party’s ward congress today (April 30, 2016).

Though reports available to INNONEWS.COM indicate that party members went to the field to vote in their choice among litany of aspirants vying for various positions at the ward level, rumours spread like wild fire that some party chieftains enmeshed in several factions in the party were more interested in hijacking forms which were meant for aspirants.
In Owerri West Local government, party members waited in vain without sighting any party official to conduct the congress.  According to some party members, they assembled as early as 9 am defying the monthly sanitation exercise held across the State to show up for the congress all to no avail.

The scenario was the same in some areas as party members  waited for long hours for the congress. An unconfirmed report said most of the party bigwigs converged at the State party secretariat and were desperate to cart away the forms.

There were reports that most of  leaders of many factions in the party were more interested in writing names of party executives rather than head to the field.

However, another report from Orlu area said the congress went on. There was no independent confirmation of this claim.  In most of the local governments in the State, harmonization was said o have been carried out despite strong proclamation by the party leadership that only a free congress will be accepted.

Our reporter made several efforts to speak to the State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Vitalis Okafor on the matter but was unsuccessful. The party is expected to issue a statement on the congress which was an exercise that was incoherent as it became clear that most of the party leaders in Imo PPP are bent on writing names of ward executive members in areas they control rather than a free and credible congress where the votes of party members will count.
