Imo State University: The Politics Behind Prof Nwoke's Sack

Details surfaced yesterday why Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State kicked out of office Prof B.E.B Nwoke as Vice Chancellor of the Imo State University, Owerri.

Nwoke who was replaced with Prof Anwuzie, former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was said to have come under fire from the Okorocha Administration for various reasons.

This Blog learnt that Nwoke came under criticism over some new measures introduced by the State Government in line with its free education programme. While the State Government is said to be introducing some unconventional methods in ensuring that it fulfils its free education programme in the institution, Nwoke was said to be averse to such policies on the basis that it will  be counter productive. 

The Ex VC believed to be students friendly was said to be not on the same page with the Government in this direction.

A source said despite the free education programme, there are moves to increase the acceptance fees for fresh students to an amount said to be exorbitant. The same measure is said to be applicable to non indigenous students who have come to IMSU in their numbers to enjoy the benefits of the much trumpeted free education programme of the present Administration in Imo State.     

Further, this Newspaper was reliably informed that the tenure-ship of Acting Vice Chancellors in the institution have never exceeded six months.  Most of the past Acting Vice Chancellors in the institution have not stayed in office beyond this period. No reason has been ascertained for this unofficial policy, but a dependable source in IMSU said the practice has been on since the Ohakim Administration as successive Vice Chancellors were on acting capacity.  

Nwoke stayed beyond such period of grace as he was Acting VC of the Institution for a year plus.

The Orlu Agenda, according to reports, might have been another strong factor which led to Nowke’s sack from office. Nwoke comes from Okigwe zone. He is said to have come under heavy fire from the Orlu cabal in the institution who strongly opposed certain policies he enunciated while acting as the Vice Chancellor of the institution.  

A source said it is in the character of serving Governors in the State to put at the helm of affairs Vice Chancellors from their geo political zone. This move is said to be in line with each serving Governor to maintain grip of the institution during their reign.
