The gale of defection that has hit both the
PDP and the APC at the national level has trickled down to Imo State as top
politicians; especially those seeking for various elective public offices in
the PDP and the APC may head elsewhere.
Some
top PDP and APC chieftains (names withheld) unsure if they will clinch their
party’s tickets of their respective parties due to the intensity of the
scramble for various elective offices are making serious moves to defect to
APGA .
This
blog gathered that the fierce contest for the governorship, senatorial, House
of Reps and other positions in the PDP and the APC may have compelled this
group of politicians to gravitate towards APGA where there is little or no fierce
scramble for such positions.
In
the APC, there are fears amongst some contenders that only those loyal to Imo
State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha or belong to his political structure may
get the nod to fly the party’s flag for various elective positions in the APC in the State.
Most of them who not want to be caught unawares
are said to be making moves to APGA, a party they consider is a safer for their
aspirations and still enjoys tremendous followership amongst the Imo populace.
It
was APGA that catapulted Rochas Okorocha to Government House, Owerri defeating
then Governor Ikedi Ohakim of the PDP.
Okorocha has since dumped APGA for the
APC.
The
media in Owerri widely reported that Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha
at a meeting held at Government House, Owerri, asked his appointees eying
elective offices on the APC platform to unveil their aspirations to him. Many
of them complied.
For
the PDP in the State, some of its aspirants are also not resting on their oars.
While those seeking for one elective office or the other continue to attend
party meetings, some of them are romancing APGA.
Last
week, former minister of Interior and a frontline governorship aspirant on the PDP platform, Capt Emmanuel Iheanacho denounced insinuations that he is
parleying with APGA.
Despite his persistent denials, his footsoldiers are said to attend APGA meetings.
During the 2011 elections in the State,
Iheanacho reportedly urged his supporters to vote for APGA, an allegation which
drew the ire of his party the PDP.
