Special Report: Inactive PDP, Docile APC And Rag Tag APGA: Which Party Takes Imo In 2015

One has observed carefully the condition of the three major political parties in Imo State and wonders which of the political parties have the nerve and political firepower to be on the saddle of governance of Imo State in 2015.

If the state of the parties in Imo presently is anything to go by, then none of the political parties can successfully beat its chest to say that it will overrun the other in the battle or scramble to take over the State.

Let’s begin with the PDP. The PDP in the State roared back to life last month when President Goodluck Jonathan visited the State to receive decampees from the All Progressive Congress, APC.
Before Mr. President’s visit, the PDP has been in shambolic state and condition as leaders of the party operated poles apart.  President Jonathan’s visit only offered a unifying platform for its bigwigs and members. Fortunately, this has not been sustained.

Since the razzmatazz of that visit fizzled away, the party has gone comatose. The party’s secretariat located along Okigwe road, Owerri, has continuously remained under lock and key, except when there are party functions which seldom holds.

There is no apex leader for the party in the State unlike in the past when then Governors Achike Udenwa and Ikedi Ohakim pulled the strings in the party.
At the moment, the bigwigs and heavyweights in the State are entangled in a cold war on who leads the party.

This manifested at the reception for President Goodluck Jonathan. It was observed that party leaders made separate arrangements for the visit. This is dangerous for the party as this may metamorphose into an implosion when the struggle for the party’s guber ticket begins.

The PDP wallow in the belief that it will “pin” Rochas at the elections and cruise to victory with the support of “Federal Might”

The All Progressive Congress, APC is infested with the bug of docility. The party which prides itself as the party in power in the State is battling with a deadly propaganda inflicted on it by the opposition.

While it enjoys pockets of support from a tiny fraction of Imolites, the party leadership is weak in the State and this translated to low turn out during the party’s registration exercise. Absence of sensitization and awareness campaigns at the wards and Local Governments is another major undoing of the party.

But it has the capacity to rise again if put its act together and undergo serious surgical operation to change its perception by Imolites in the State. The achievements of the rescue mission administration is seen by leaders of the party as the passport to victory in the coming elections.

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State has strived without success to erase its status as a rag tag political party.  The party has not grown in leaps and bounds even when Rochas Okorocha emerged governor of the State on its platform in 2011.

However, its strength relies on its “spiritual members” (it has successfully convinced Imolites that every Igbo man or woman is a member of APGA by identity) to always cruise it to victory in every election. This is why the party has won almost all the elections since the advent of democracy in Imo State.

APGA hopes to reap from the anticipated fierce political fireworks to be exchanged by the PDP and APC in Imo State at the elections. This is why its members have maintained faith with the party and hope that the altercations between two political titans shall be its benefit.  Lets watch and see
