Special Report: After Nyako: Who's Next

The impeachment of Murtala Nyako, retired Admiral and immediate past governor of Adamawa State is a serious matter.

It is capable of sending jitters down the spine of other APC governors in the country especially those who have been so loquacious against President Goodluck Jonathan's re - election plans.

Before Nyako’s impeachment, in Edo and Nassarawa States, Governors Adams Oshiomole and Tanko Al Makura respectively have been sitting on the edge of their seats watching and waiting with bated breath how they will escape the latest onslaught from their lawmakers.

In Nasarawa State, Al Makura has been served an impeachment notice, thus opening a floodgate of political crisis between the executive and the State Assembly lawmakers.

If Nyako’s case is a closed chapter, it is not so for Oshiomole who is also on fire over recent development in the Edo State House of Assembly.

The trend of impeachments of APC State Governors is a source of worry. It is a big blow for the APC who recently caved in to the superior political firepower of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ekiti State where one of its governors, Kayode Fayemi was  roundly defeated by Ayo Fayose.

No doubt, the APC has every reason to raise eyebrows over these developments. It has said the gale of impeachments against its governors is orchestrated by the PDP and its agents in the presidency

The party has claimed that some governors on its platform such as Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chibuike Amaechi, Rochas Okorocha of Kano, Rivers and Imo States have also continuously been receiving threats of impeachment.

While the APC has every reason to suspect the opposition, it is important to say that its outcry holds no water and is baseless. Infact, it is a disease it inflicted on itself. Since the party came on board, it has not successfully convinced Nigerians that it can do better than the PDP whose reign in the last 14 years has not been a success story either.

The APC wittingly or unwittingly  succumbed to those antics and plagues the PDP is noted for. Lack of internal democracy and other anti democratic tendencies displayed by its leadership showcased the party as one that lacks what it takes to give Nigerians alternative and responsible leadership. And because it elevated it to an art which compelled some of its members to leave the party or on the verge of leaving, the party has continued to sink into what one cannot decipher.

And because it bared its fangs so early, the opposition PDP took advantage of  its topsy- turvy attitude to make  a mince meat of it. First the PDP began to poach its members and then the clincher, used PDP members in the State Houses of assemblies to move against APC governors as part of its grand design to gain more States  before the general polls in 2015.

However, the APC governors who have become punching bags of their respective lawmakers should be blamed for allowing the opposition PDP to have greater number of lawmakers in their State Assemblies. In Adamawa State for instance, Nyako failed to take hold of the lawmakers and the party when he left the PDP for the APC.

And if he did so at one time, he failed to sustain  his grip on them. No politician worth his or her onion will allow political enemies sleep on his or her corridor. This is Nyako’s albatross and he has paid bitterly for it. Other APC governors should gird their loins. it is not enough to cry blue murder when the deed is done.

It should strive to change its perception and revive that flame that choked the PDP when it announced its arrival on the political landscape of the country or .......
