Why Lands Remain Undeveloped In Imo

The double standards put up by the Imo State Government may be the reason why land owner cannot develop their property  in the State.

In recent times, the State Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Uche Nwosu, has severally called on land owners in the State to expedite action to develop their lands or face revocation.

Despite this warning, many land owners in the State shy away from this task and responsibility.

This Blog however gathered that the reason land owners fail to heed to Government advice is not far- fetched.

A source said the major reason is the increase in value of plots of land in various areas which compels land owners to now pay 10% capital Gains Tax on properties and register their lands

He said “For instance, a land at Housing Area B is N500, 000 while in the new chart it is N7, 500,000, thus the new rate scares people away from registering their lands. And inspite of this, the Governor or the commissioner keeps on insisting that people should go and develop their lands.

This development has raised serious concern among land owners in the State who wonder if the government is just being deceitful or unaware of the implications of its action.

There has been serious uproar in the state how the State Government forcefully takes over landed properties of individuals on the pretext that it was not developed.

Anti abortion crusader and radical surgeon, Phillip Njemanze was a victim. He lamented to This Blog that his parcel of land located Owerri- Naze road was not forcefully taken away from him because it was not developed but because he blew the lid on the  abortion bill sneaked into Law no 12 of the State.

He said despite a court order, the State government is using a member of the Imo State House of Assembly (names withheld) as a front disposes him of his land.

Efforts to speak to Uche Nwosu, the Imo State Commissioner for Lands was unsuccessful, as several calls put across to his mobile phone by our reporters rang severally without response.
