Senator Samuel Anyanwu,
representing Imo East Senatorial District, has faulted the 2016 budget saying
the $38 oil enchmark is unrealistic because the current oil price is below $30
may drop further.
The Senate Committee
Chairman on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition advocated for a review of
the oil benchmark to be in tandem with global economic realities.
Speaking during senate
debate on the 2016 budget, Anyanwu said it is time for Nigeria to take the
issue of diversification of the economy more serious.
The Imo State born
senator said government should immediately explore alternative sources of
funding to make up for the shortfall occasioned by the sharp drop in the price
of crude oil.
“We must tell ourselves
the truth. The oil benchmark upon which the 2016 budget was predicated is
unrealistic
“We keep talking about
the diversification of the economy.
“But the budget
proposals for the solid and agricultural sectors are almost the same.
Senator Anyanwu frowned
at the depth of environmental degradation in the South, saying the region has
been internally displaced by erosion. He said the budget makes a caricature of
the region.
