Political hostilities has returned to Imo North Senatorial District (Okigwe zone) as the two major political parties are throwing political jabs at each other ahead of Saturday, 20th February, 2016 re run polls
Last Sunday, the APC leadership South East Caucus raised an alarm, accusing the PDP of planning to use the manual voters register to rig the election in favour of its candidate. senator Athan Achonu.
In a statement signed by Osita Okechukwu, the publicity secretary of the party in the South East, he said a vote for the APC is a gateway for the Igbos have a place in the leadership of the senate.
The ruling party South East spokesman also said the camp of the PDP candidate is panicking and afraid of an impending defeat because some of the PDP House of Assembly candidates are blaming the PDP Imo North Senatorial candidate, Athan Achonu of causing their defeat in the last election.
He predicted victory for his party’s senatorial candidate, Benjamin Uwajumuogu, who according to him is leading based on popular opinion of voters.
Okechukwu said based on fear of defeat staring before the PDP on the face and its candidate, Athan Achonu, the PDP is involved in a plot to use the manual voters’ registration to rig the re-run election of Imo North senatorial district.
But the PDP has fired back at the APC, through its candidate, Senator Athan Achonu who told an Owerri based radio station,HOTFM that the APC has no place for Igbos, stressing that the APC cannot provide the platform for Igbos to re- connect to the "national grid".
Achonu dismissed insinuations that his election was nullified by the law court on the strength of the petition filed by the APC senatorial candidate, Benjamin Uwajumuogu.
He said it was the omission of Accord party symbol on the ballot paper that led to the cancellation of the polls by the Appellate Court.
Senator Achonu said he is confident of victory in the polls.
The PDP candidate, Achonu further alleged that the APC is desperate for power having made plans to influence some INEC officials to manipulate the polls in favour of their candidate.
