Why Imo State Govt Sacked Revenue Contractors- Commissioner

. Insists Everyone Must Pay Tax In Imo State.

AJUMBE
The Imo State government has lamented over the activities of revenue contractors in the State, saying it no longer need their services.

Internal Resources and Pension Matters Commissioner, Vitalis Ajumbe, told newsmen that  due to the inconsistency of revenue collectors the State government cannot say what its real revenue is at any time.

“Government does not have access to the cash books of the agents. They post whatever they like and give whatever they like. This is not acceptable in this austere measure times” he said.

According to him, the revenue agents are occupying government offices and neither pay utilities bills nor rent, pointing out that in the end, government still pays them 40% of their declared receipts.

“What is also most disturbing is that these revenue agents do not pay any tax on monies paid to them” Ajumbe said.

The Commissioner had told this online newspaper last month unemployed, clergy and any taxable citizen of the State will henceforth pay tax.

He re-echoed the State government’s stance on the issue, insisting that there is no going back on the policy despite flaks it has attracted from majority of the Imo citizenry.

“Nobody in Imo State will escape from paying commensurate tax. To show how serious this government is about it, the administration will tax allowances paid to royal fathers” the commissioner stated.
