Imo PDP Leaders Regroup In Abuja, Set To Meet National Chairman, Sherrif

. As Owerri Municipal Chapter Vow To Sack Corrupt Leaders

BY EZE EGEJURU

Top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Imo State are regrouping in Abuja to parley with the party’s national Chairman, Ali Modu Sherrif.

The meeting is coming on the heels of bickering and sharp division among party heavyweights in the State who have been involved in political skirmishes to outsmart each other for the soul of the party.

The State party executive led by Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie was sacked by the then Uche Secondus led National Working Committee in the basis that their tenure has elapsed.

In its place, an interim committee headed by Vitalis Okafor from Anambra State was appointed to steer the affairs of the party pending the conduct of primaries.

The Anyaehie executive has proceeded to the law courts where they are challenging the composition of the caretaker committee.

The lingering political fisticuffs in the party is believed to be fueled by two leading politicians who are said to have governorship ambitions in 2019.

Speculations have been rife that a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha and Senator Hope Uzodinma, senator representing Imo West Senatorial district are very much interested in 2019 guber race in Imo State.

Ihedioha was the party’s governorship candidate in 2015 losing to All Progressive Congress, APC candidate, Rochas Okorocha.

His loss was attributed to sabotage by some of his party members.

The Abuja meeting is said to be a continuation of an earlier visit by Sherrif who appointment as national chairman of the party has continue to cause ripples in the party.

Sherrif visited Imo and Abia State chapters of the party immediately he was proclaimed the party chairman.

Meanwhile, the Owerri municipal chapter of the PDP has restated its commitment to rid the party of leaders who are corrupt.

At a well attended meeting in Owerri,  a party leader, Ebere Chukwuemeka, alleged that party leaders in the area converted N30 million naria for personal use.

“ On the day of the election, our party agents were given indomie, salt and egg, while the entire N30 million disappeared into the pockets of these so called leaders of the party in Owerri municipal.

“ We can no longer work with such corrupt leaders in PDP in the area.  We are tired of losing Owerri municipal to the opposition because these leaders embezzle our money and appoint only their friends, family members and cronies as party executives” Ebere said

He assured that the forthcoming party congress will be a departure from past practices where some few leaders sit in their homes and write the names of party executives.

He called on those interested in various positions not to be deterred by such old practices, stressing that the PDP is a brand new product where the will of its members will prevail over some select few.
