South East Town Unions Lament Over Killer Herdsmen In Igboland, Reject Proposed Grazing Sites

The Association of South East Town Unions, (ASETU) have risen strongly against the activities and actions of Fulani herdsmen in the region, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to checkmate the activities of the killer Fulani nomads.

In a communique issued and signed by the five South East State co- ordinators of the union  after its expanded National Executive Council meeting in Aba, it said the activities of AK 47 wielding Fulani nomads in the South East have given concern to the people and expressed worry that the federal government has not taken any definite action to halt the assault
. It condemned in strong terms the recent provoking and senseless invasion of Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani Council Area of Enugu State where scores of “our brothers and sisters were gruesomely murdered in their own land by rampaging nomads”, calling on the Federal government to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.

The Union commended the Enugu State governor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for his wisdom in handling the situation in Enugu with maturity.
ASETU sternly opposed the proposed grazing fields for the herdsmen, saying the people of the South East have no land to surrender.

Part of the statement reads “We do know that South Easterners doing their private businesses in other parts of Nigeria duly negotiate and settle satisfactorily for their shops and business environments both with individuals and government agencies. Why should that of “Fulani herdsmen” be an exception?"

It said the association supported the war against corruption of President Buhari and “reckons his personal integrity profile, which is the greatest singular virtue any leader can possess”.

The group stated “It particularly notes that corruption is the root cause of all Nigeria’s problems. That the grassroots represented by the town unions suffer the greatest detriment from the negative consequences of corruption and will also be most benefited when it is tackled. Therefore, we completely and totally support the president in prosecuting the war, no matter who is involved. We however advise him not to be vindictive and to resist any temptation of discriminatory justice, as that would repudiate his credibility and that of the programme”.

ASETU reminded the government “That the town union remains an indispensible stakeholder and the most effective agent for the maintenance peace and order, social mobilization, political education, dissemination of information and therefore most reliable structure to spearhead grassroots development in our communities and collate the aggregate opinion and feelings of the people at the grassroots, and should be carried along in some sensitive decisions concerning the region."
