Traditional Rulers In Imo State To Be Classifed, As Okorocha Moves To Create First Class Monarchs

In what is seen as further decimation of the traditional institution in Imo State,  the State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has announced plans to create what he described as “first class traditional rulers”

This policy was part of the decisions reached at a meeting the Governor held with the traditional rulers at the Ahiajoku Centre in Owerri. This measure  is coming on the heels of widespread complaints over the proliferation of the traditional institution in Imo State lately.

Several Ezeship tussles have arisen in Imo State ostensibly due to proliferation of the institution. There have been complains of men of questionable character crowned as Ezes in the State- a situation which has further engulfed several communities in trouble.

Apart from the issue of first class rulers, the meeting also deliberated on the forthcoming election of the chairman of the state traditional rulers council.

This newspaper gathered that the traditional rulers who want to qualify for the elevation of  first class status must fulfill at least three conditions, which included that the ruler must have 2000 taxable adults.

According to the decision of the traditional rulers at the meeting, the elevation of the traditional rulers will be based on merit. A source told INNONEWS.COM that the elevation to the first class status is to shore up the dignity of the traditional rulers within the state and beyond.

The traditional rulers were said to have agreed on the conditions for the elevation, which also included that the community of the traditional ruler must have a population of 10,000 people.

In addition, a traditional ruler that owns an industry, has a peaceful community, encourage the tradition of his people, whose community has a good number of churches, markets and schools will qualify for elevation to the first class status.
