Choas In Alvan Ikoku College Of Education, Owerri, As Students Go On Rampage

It was chaos at the Alvan Ikoku College of Education (AICE), today, July 18, 2016 when students of the citadel of learning went on rampage protesting what they described as the school authorities insensitivity to their plight and welfare.
The AICE management had announced last week a No School Fees, No Examination policy.
This did not go down well with the students who had last week complained over plans by the Imo State Government to demolish the only fly over in the institution by the Imo State government.
INNONEWS.COM was told that despite repeated appeals to the management to rescind its decision which was futile, the students in their hundreds barricaded the school gates today demanding an immediate reversal of the policy.
The students carried placards and strongly demanded among other things reduction in several fees and levies charged by the institution, including that of the Teachers Registration Council.
They were irked with the lack of power supply in the hostels and the non release of the 2015/2016 budget for the Students Union Government (SUG) .
According to witnesses, the protest was initially peaceful but suddenly became violent when the school security personnel and some policemen attached to the Imo State Police Command; Owerri fired teargas at the students.
One of the students was injured in the melee while some others who sustained minor injuries are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the State Police command, DSP Andrew Enwerem was quoted to have said that six students were arrested, adding that the students instigated violence on campus by throwing stones at the College Provost who wanted to address the grieving students .
The Police spokesperson said that the students instigated violence on the campus by throwing stones at the college provost who was on hand to address the enraged students.
