Imo State run ORIENT radio
yesterday (Saturday, January 16,2016) announced that the State government has shut down some
parastatals and agencies.
Workers in the affected
agencies were said to have been directed to go to Ministries supervising the scrapped
agencies for them to be reabsorbed or otherwise.
The office of the Secretary
to the Government of Imo State was said to have issued the directive.
Some of the affected
agencies include Imo State Sports Council, Imo State Water Development Agency
(IWADA), Imo Job Centre, Imo Transport Company (ITC), Hospital Management Board and 14 others.
A statement quoted the office
of the SGI as saying that the agencies have become moribund and no longer self
sustaining.
INNONEWS.COM gathered
that workers of the now scrapped agencies were not receiving subvention from
the State government for a long time. Workers in these parastatals have consistently
complained of non pay for several months
It was unclear if the affected
workers of these agencies have been laid off but a source said those affected by the directive are mere casual workers.
The Imo State government had said
it will sack 4,000 workers from the State workforce, a move which attracted the
intervention of the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
Meanwhile, the Imo
State Governor, Rochas Okorocha has proceeded on vacation
An official statement by
Sam Onwuemedo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, confirmed the Governor’s
rest leave which was also broadcast by the state run radio station Saturday night.
