The
recent visit of the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Dr.
Ogbonnaya Onu to China has started yielding fruits, as the leading Asian Nation
has assured that it would build a ground receiving station in Nigeria that will
make the reception of satellite data possible in other to fast track the
contribution of Science and Technology in Nigeria’ s development process.
According to a statement signed by the Minister's aide, Sunny Onyeukwu, Dr. Onu in
a meeting with top Officials of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology
in Beinjing the Chinese capital, on Thursday January 14, 2016, said China applauded
the new Science, Technology and Innovation direction of the Buhari
administration and hinted of their preparedness to encourage greater
collaboration with the Buhari government to ensure that its new initiative in
the sector will help create jobs, reduce crime, boost health care and
strengthen food security.
Speaking,
Dr. Onu said that he was in China to hold discussions with the aim of seeking
and strengthening areas of co-operation and technical assistance to drive the
new initiative on Science, Technology and Innovation in Nigeria.
He
recalled the giant strides made by China in using Science and Technology to
fast track her development and disclosed that Nigeria under the Buhari
administration was determined to chart a new course by emphasizing Science and
Technology as an important instrument to drive the Change
Agenda.
The Statement reads "The
Honourable Minister sought the collaboration of China on how to effectively utilise Science,
Technology and Innovation to enable both countries further leverage on its
benefits for the future development of their respective countries, especially
in view of their peculiar circumstances as Asia’s most papulose nation and
Africa’s most populous country respectively.
" It
would be recalled that the Honourable Minister of Science and technology on Tuesday
January 12, 2016 proceeded on an official visit to China and Indonesia.
In
the course of the visit, Dr Onu is expected to hold talks with leading Chinese
and Indonesia businessmen in an effort to attract Direct Foreign Investment to
stimulate growth in Nigeria’s Science and Technology Sector.
"He
is also expected to discuss with Nigerians in the Diaspora in these two
countries on efforts being made by the Buhari Administration to reposition and
strengthen Science and Technology in the country as a way to encourage them to
invest in Nigeria’s development process.
"Dr.
Onu is due back in the country on Thursday, January 21, this year.
