A protest staged youths of the All
Progressive Congress, APC at the headquarters of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo State forced the commission to suspend the
polls scheduled to hold on February 20, 2016.
Hundreds of youths and women besieged INEC office located along Owerri-
Port Harcourt road as early as 7am friday, demanding the removal of some officers of
the commission they claimed belong to the opposition, PDP.
Speaking to journalists in Owerri,
INEC Administrative secretary, Chinedu Oburunobi said the commission is no
longer at ease with the protest of the youths and women, thus necessitated the
cancellation of the re- run.
However, an INEC official told this
newspaper that security remains a powerful reason why the election in Imo North
senatorial district was cancelled.
“ The security report in the area is
not encouraging” he said.
