Political stalwarts of the PDP in the area have continued to drum support for its Imo North Senatorial candidate, Senator Athan Achonu.
Top PDP leaders in Imo State such as former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, former Deputy Speaker, Federal House of Representatives, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha , Hon Obinna Onwubariri, Member representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency on (Thursday, February 20th,2016) appealed to the people of Imo North senatorial to re- elect Senator Achonu in the re run polls.
The former Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, said it is important Achonu is re- elected as senator; stressing that his re- election will strengthen the stronghold of the PDP in Imo State.
Ihedioha called on PDP members to come out en-masse to vote for Hon Achonu and Lady Joy Mbawuike, the PDP House of Assembly candidate in the polls.
He recalled the massive support the people of Okigwe North gave to his governorship bid in 2015, urging them to re- enact such support in Saturday’s election.
In his remarks, the former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim advised the youths of the Isiala Mbano LGA to cast their votes for Achonu on Saturday and ensure they defend their votes accordingly.
He said those who do want Senator Achonu to return to the senate are enemies of the people who want to hijack the dividends of democracy accruable to them, stressing that barely six months as senator representing Imo North senatorial district, Achonu has performed creditably.
The former Imo State Governor took a swipe at the APC senatorial candidate in the re run polls, Rt. Hon Benjamin Uwajumuogu.
“Uwajumuogu cannot represent us. We (PDP) gave him PDP ticket which he used to go the House of Assembly to represent us only to dump us and join the APC the day Imo State House of Assembly was inaugurated” Ohakim said .
Earlier in his remarks, the members representing Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Obinna Onwubariri said a vote for the APC is a wasted vote.
He said the a cabal bent on jeopardizing the future of the people of Imo North are bent on achieving their mission by denying the PDP candidate, Senator Achonu a return to the senate.
Onwubariri stated that the PDP cannot afford to lose the re run election, urging the people to give Achonu and the PDP House of Assembly candidate in the re- run polls, Lady Joy Mbawuike total support.
“I want everyone to give full support to the PDP candidates on Saturday. The re- election of Senator Achonu will be a vote for continuity and it will enable me as your representative in the House of Reps to bring the dividends of democracy to you all.
He said the APC candidate, Benjamin Uwajumuogu failed to deliver when he was the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly.
The event was witnessed by some members of the House of Representatives such as Hon Henry Nwawuba (Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency). Hon Bede Eke (Ngor Okpala/Aboh Mbaise Federal Constituency), Hon Jones Onyeriri ( Isu/ Njaba Federal Constituency).
