Civil
Servants in Imo State are worried that they have not received their January
2016 Salary.
The
non- payment of salaries is coming barely a month the Nigeria Labour Congress,
NLC, Trade Union Congress, TUC and workers in Imo State went on protest over the
suspension of 3,000 workers in 19 parastatals and agencies by the Imo State government.
They
were later recalled after the State government signed an agreement with Labour to concede
70% of the total revenue accrued to the State to payment of workers salaries in the State
.Some
of the workers who spoke to this online newspaper said they are still surprised
why they have not been paid for the month of January.
“This
is almost the end of February, yet we have not received pay for the month of
January 2016” said a staff of one of the ministries who spoke on condition of
anonymity.
No
word has emanated from officials of the Imo State government why workers in the
State have not been paid.
A
source however told this newspaper that “workers may be paid at the end of the month
of February. They will be paid all outstanding debts. There is shortfall in the
allocation of the State.
“We
wait for the release of the January allocation from the federation Account
which was just announced by the Minister of Finance just yesterday (February
23, 2016).
It
was gathered that the State government may pay two month salaries to the workers
at the end of the February 2016. There was no independent confirmation of this
claim as no State government official agreed to speak on the matter when
contacted by this newspaper.
Workers
in the State and the State government have been involved in a ding – dong affair
after the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress revolted over
plans by the State government to sack some workers.
