.Ex Imo Assembly Speaker Says Electoral Officers Came From Deputy Senate Pres, Ike Ekweremadu’s Local Government
The
war of words fiercely exchanged by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the
All Progressive Congress, APC over the suspension of the Re run election in Imo
North Senatorial District is not yet over.
The
APC Imo North Senatorial Candidate, Benjamin Uwajumuogu accused the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the PDP of working together to rig the
elections.
The
former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly described INEC as “a PDP
edifice” and an appendage of the party. He said the commission needs total overhauling,
alleging that the commission has never conducted a free and fair election in
the State.
On
how the Commission and PDP wanted to rig him out, he said, two days to the
election, Electoral Officers with strong PDP links were posted to areas known
to have huge votes such as Isiala Mbano Local Government Area.
Uwajumuogu
alleged that his opponent and PDP candidate, Athan Achonu had petitioned INEC
complaining of the posting of some Electoral Officers which were inimical to
win the election and without notifying the APC, INEC went ahead to withdraw the
three Electoral Officers (Eos).
He
said the commission went ahead to appoint one Benjamin Igwe (aka Bello) to
suddenly take over the position of Deputy Director, Operations, 24 hours to the
election.
He said “On Friday, INEC brought in 75 people
from Enugu State claiming to be INEC officers. And what they were trying to do
is to train them as the collation officers who collate all the election results
from the polling booths and once they put those people there, the elections are
as good as over.
“INEC
was bringing in these people and all of them came from one local Government and
were all related to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. The plans were
hatched and executed by top INEC officers headed by a Federal Commissioner,
Lawrence Nwaruku who was a former PDP Minister. It was when these reports
leaked that we started to protest this election” he stated.
He
maintained that INEC needs to be overhauled. “INEC in Imo State must be
overhauled if there must be election in Imo State. We cannot continue to have
all the elections rigged in Imo State”
