Three months in 2016, members of the Imo State House of Assembly have not received their basic salary.
However, there reports that they have steadily received jumbo pay as allowances and benefits.

Imo Assembly sources told this online newspaper that the lawmakers are also affected by non- payment of  salary in the State which has weighed down Imo Workers since the start of the new year.

“We forget that they are public servants.  And remember when the Joint Negotiating Council made up of Labour and the State government said they will pay 70% to workers. it included all public office holders and political appointees.

“The lawmakers are part of the new payment structure for public servants in Imo State. Their salaries will also be deducted” an Assembly source told this newspaper.

Workers in Imo State were last week issued cheques for salaries for the month of January 2016 with a 30% cut which was widely resented. Staffers of Imo State University, Owerri had to embark on strike to protest their rejection of the salary cut.

However, opposition lawmakers of the PDP were said to have opposed the deduction of their salaries.   The PDP is in the minority in the House having only six members. Efforts to speak to Hon Obinna Egu, the minority leader was unsuccessful/

One of the lawmakers who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the non-payment of their salaries but admitted that they will get their cheques by Tuesday next week after the Easter holiday
