Despite Governor Rochas
Okorocha of Imo State firm resolve to install a successor after the expiration
of his second tenure in office in 2019, three prominent politicians in the
ruling All Progressive Congress, APC in the State are set to truncate the Governor’s plan by
taking a shot at the contest.
Okorocha is believed to be
preparing grounds to have a successor to continue his legacies when he leaves
office.
He had said that zoning will no longer be a
factor to elect the next State governor.
The Governor’s postulation is said to have rather fired on other contenders for the governorship contest in the APC who are bent on furthering their ambitions.
One of them is said to have
taken control of the ward executives in the State by paying them their monthly
salaries.
This newspaper had reported that it is part of the strategies of the politician
to take hold of the party which has been
cash strapped despite having a serving governor and majority of members in the
Imo State House of Assembly.
Another APC top politician also
from Okigwe zone (Imo North) is also interested in the contest and has long time political
ties with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The politician recently used his contacts
in the presidency to influence the appointment of his elder brother as Vice
Chancellor of one of the federal universities in the South East.
The APC heavyweight was to
be appointed a Minister in Buhari’s government but was told soft pedal to accommodate
Governor’s Okorocha’s ministerial nominee.
While the politician has maintained cordial
relationship with Okorocha, he has never hidden his displeasure privately how
Okorocha runs the State.
This newspaper finding
reveals that he is also preparing grounds to contest for the governorship election of Imo State in 2019 on the APC platform.
Another interested contender is from Imo East Senatorial Zone (Owerri Zone) who was a staunch ally of the Governor before things went awry. He was said to have served the Imo governor diligently before he was kicked out of office
He is said to have begun subtle consultations and will
declare his ambition when the time comes.
