Imo State Commissioner of Police,
Taiwo Lakanu, says he personally leads his men to nab kidnappers and armed
robbers since he assumed duty as the State top cop in September 2015.
Lakanu who spoke to select editors
of newspapers in the state at the State police command in Owerri, said one of the
major task before him and the command is to ensure that the state is safe and
secure at all times.
The CP said “We have made Imo State safe. And this
is why I personally lead my men to arrest kidnappers and armed robbers wherever
they are in the State. We believe in operational mode of policing. And it is
working successfully”.
He continued “When one of you, the Channels
tv reporter was kidnapped, I lead my men to the bush to rescue the
abducted reporter. There have been so many cases like that. When we also heard
that Douglas Road has been taken over by miscreants, I and my men went in there
and we cleared the place and made some arrests”.
He said the command has made many
arrests and the suspects charged to court, stating that such proactive measures
have contributed to reduce criminality in the State.
Lakanu stated that since he assumed office as the
State Police Commissioner, he has not left any stone unturned in combating crime
in the State, assuring that he will not relent in the task.
He revealed he has interacted with
over 500 traditional rulers in the state and other stakeholders on the need for
them to co- operate with the police to fight crime, adding that this measure
has paid off with the arrest of many suspects.
He called on the media especially the
local journalists in the State to co-operate with the police in the fight
against crime by reporting balanced stories and investigative reports.
Lakanu said “We need a synergy with
the press in the fight against crime in Imo State. We need to work together in
order to rid the State of any form of criminality”
In his remarks, Chairman, Imo
Newspaper Editors Forum, Eze Adiukwu commended the Police Commissioner for his proactive
efforts towards making the State crime free. He said journalists in the State
are willing to work with the State Police command to achieve this noble objective.

newspaper, INNONEWS.COM, Mr. Innocent Onyeukwu commended the Police for a job well done but called on the Police
Commissioner to also provide security for journalists in the State who have in
recent times become victims of armed robbery and kidnapping.
In a related development, the Imo State Police
Command has begun recruitment into the Nigeria Police band.

Enwerem, Police Public Relations Officer, said interested applicants must be
between the ages of 18 t0 25 years and must possess WAEC O’ level 5 credits
including Maths and must be physically fit.
The statement said interested
applicants are to report at the office of the Police Public Relations Officer
for documentation and screening.
