The
leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC in Imo
State have denied being responsible for payment of salaries of workers in the
State.
This
was disclosed by the leadership of the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) led
by Austin Chilakpu and Paul Akalazu.
The
duo who spoke on interactive radio programme, HOTFM, Owerri said it is
not true that they now pay workers salaries was widely read in the media and
insinuated in some quarters.
Mr.
Chilakpu pointedly said the Committee made up of the State government and
labour representatives only review the monthly federal allocation to the State,
pointing out that they do not have access to the Internal Generated Revenue of
the State.
One
of the terms of an agreement between labour and the State government was that
all monies accrued to the State monthly as a basis for the 70-30% sharing ration
between labour and the government.
Akalazu
said that is not the case presently as the State government still carries out
payment of workers’ salaries in Imo State, as Labour only supervises.
The
reaction of labour is coming on the heels of claims by the State government
that labour is solely responsible for the payment of salaries of workers.
Labour and Imo State government had entered into an agreement to share the monthly revenue accruable to the State on 70-30% basis after workers protests backed by the national leadership of the NLC and TUC in the State over plans by the State government to downsize the state workforce.
