The Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) has been called on to stop the endless delay in fixing a new date for
the re run for Imo North Senatorial (Okigwe zone) election.
In a letter to Chairman of INEC, a group named
Okigwe League of Professionals said it is important the elections are held
without further delay “so that our district would have a representation at the
red chamber and the State House of Assembly”.
The letter signed by Prof U.D Anyanwu and Mr
Emeka Ogaraku, Chairman and Secretary of the group respectively, said it is “
to our chagrin that your electoral body conducted re- run elections in Rivers,
Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States with all security challenges they have”
“We sincerely hope and pray that Independent
National Electoral Commission does not want to deny us the opportunity of
representation as was the experience in Oguta Local Government Area of the
State in 2011” the group said
The group stated that “expectedly, we have lost
out in the 2016 appropriations as we do not have a senator to protect and ensure
that our aspiration are met
“Parliamentary politics is all about horse trading
and lobbying. If you do not have a representative, too bad for your district” the
letter stated
The Imo North Senatorial re run was suspended by
INEC over protests carried out by some youths said to be members of the All
Progressive Congress, APC at INEC headquarters, Owerri.
The electoral body cited security reasons for
putting off the polls. Since then, both
parties have engaged in political crossfire.
The contest is a straight and fierce battle
between the PDP candidate, Senator Athan Achonu and the APC candidate and
former Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumuogu.
