Immediate
past Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Emeka
Ihedioha has slammed the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha over the ongoing massive demolition of buildings across
the streets and major roads in Owerri metropolis under the guise of “expansion of internal
roads and remodelling of the Owerri Capital City”
A statement signed by Ihedioha's media aide, Chibuike Onyeukwu in Owerri, the 2015 Imo PDP governorship candidate "is of the view that the project even as good as it
seems, is not the best at this time considering that the roads and
streets under review are most of the passable roads constructed under
the State administrations since inception".
Part of the statement reads "One
had expected the government, given the paucity of funds accruing to it,
to place its priorities right by completing the projects it flagged off
since 2011 which have become death traps and several impassable roads
begging for attention across the Owerri Capital City".
"The
plight of the owners of the demolished buildings and properties also
should be of great concern to the government. Therefore, Rt. Hon. Emeka
Ihedioha wishes to urge the Governor to give the ongoing exercise a
human face by ensuring that adequate palliatives and compensation are
provided for those directly affected by the ongoing exercise".
"This
is even more compelling as we are in a democratic government where the
fundamental rights of citizens are guaranteed by our Constitution".
