South East and South- South State lawmakers
converged at the Imo State House of Assembly, Owerri Friday, July 15, 2016 to deliberate on alternatives
to militancy and take a position on the controversial grazing reserve proposals
before the National Assembly.
In attendance were lawmakers from
eleven States that make up the two regions.
The Assemblymen kicked against
citing any grazing reserves in the two geo- political zones.
In a motion moved by Hon Dr (Mrs)
Blessing Nwagba, member representing Aba North constituency of Abia State,
seconded by some lawmakers from Edo, Ebonyi Akwa Ibom, Bayelsab States and the
Deputy Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ugonna Ozuruigbo, they
stated that they are not in support of the grazing reserves.
One of the lawmakers from Ebonyi State said “We
cannot atone human beings because of animals. We cannot exchange our brothers
and sisters because of animals”.
The Assemblymen contend that if the
federal Government must establish grazing reserves, then fishing Reserves
should also be set up for the people in the southern region of the country. They called
on Federal lawmakers from the two zones to reject out rightly the Grazing
Reserve Bill before the National Assembly.
In a uniamous decision read on behalf
of the lawmakers by the host and Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon
Acho Ihim, they advised that the militants be conscripted to protect
oil pipelines and provide adequate security for oil installations in the region.
He
called on the National Assembly to urgently address the issue of militancy for
peace to prevail.
They also called on the Federal Government to sheath
their sword and enter into dialogue with the militants.
