The Majority leader and
member representing Owerri municipal in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Lugard
Osuji has explained that he stands for the re- modeling of the Eke Ukwu Owerri
market.
He said those bandying
reports that he is in support of the relocation of the market are missing the
point, adding that the present state of the Eke Ukwu Owerri is totally unacceptable.
Osuji also denied
reports that he was attacked by youths of Umuonyeche village when he went to
consult with the traditional ruler of the area on the Eke Ukwu Owerri market matter.
The lawmaker who spoke
to INNONEWS.COM said the Eke Ukwu Owerri market is a traditional market that
belongs to Owerri people, but stated that the present condition of the market
is unacceptable. He said the way the market is now constitutes a
nuisance, insisting that the market has to be remodeled.
The Majority Leader stated that presently he
is consulting all the traditional rulers in the villages in Owerri to explain
the State government’s position and at the same time hear the position of the
people which will form the basis of his report to the State government.
Osuji added that he was
not attacked by youths of Umuonyeche village as erroneously published on the
social media.
He said “That report is
false, untrue and unfounded. I was inside the palace of the traditional ruler
of the Umuonyeche discussing with stakeholders of the community and some youths
were outside the palace protesting that they will not accept relocation of Eke
Ukwu Owerri market.
“Everyone has the right
to protest. I was never attacked. I was not molested by anybody” The Majority
Leader stated.
He said those spreading
falsehood against him are those who are opposed against the autonomous status
of various villages in Owerri and investors at the Eke Ukwu Owerri Market.
Osuji added “I wonder
why I have been singled out for blackmail on this issue and I know where it is
coming from. Some of them are the investors at the Market and those who are
opposed to the autonomous status of the villages that make up Owerri. These are
the two groups after me.
He continued “And I ask how many of the Orlu
traders at EkeUkwu have bothered to tell the Governor, who is their brother, to
stop the relocation? None.
“They have all focused
their blackmail on me and I want to say that the market has to be remodeled so
that Owerri indigenes who don’t have up to 10% of the investment in the market
can regain their traditional market” he declared.
