Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, the former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), on Monday registered as a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Onu, who registered at the Obiozara ward in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi, condemned the attacks against members of the party at some registration centres.
According to him, the reason for the several attacks on APC boils down on the fear by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it will lose the seat of power in 2015.
"We want to use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerians to give APC a chance. Nigerians want change and this change will come from the APC.
"We are promising Nigerians that once we are in power, we are going to ensure better welfare for them."
The former governor of old Abia State said that the purpose of the registration was to pave way for the conduct of congresses and convention of the party before the forthcoming general elections.
Onu said that only registered members could participate in the congresses.
"We are very optimistic that we will take over power in 2015. The strength of APC is not just the 16 states that we are controlling; the strength of APC is that Nigerians want change.
"So we are very optimistic that with the support of Nigerians, with the blessings of God, we will control more states and also control the federal government."
On the election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Onu said the party was studying it and would come up with its position at the appropriate time.
Onu, however, said he would preferred the elections to hold in one day in order to reduce rigging.
"With such arrangement, we are going to have many people and it will be difficult for elections to be rigged in this country.
"All we want is free and fair, credible, peaceful and transparent elections.” (NAN)
