APC National Convention: South East Stakeholders Demand National Chairman Post

As the All Progressive Congress, APC inch close to hold its national convention on May 24, 2014, a group, Concerned APC Stake holders In The South East, has appealed to the leaders of the party to zone the national chairmanship seat to the South East.

The group said its position is coming on the heels of reports that the party may concede the national chairmanship seat to the South- South. It said doing so negates the tenets of equity and justice.

In a statement signed by the group’s chairman, Chief Reginald Ekwueme, it said the party should consider the fact that the South East is a major ethnic tribe in the country and an indispensable component in the nation’s political landscape.

Part of the statement reads” The South East is a veritable ground for the APC.
The region ought to be accommodated in the scheme of things of the party. If the North takes the presidential ticket, the South West goes for the Vice Presidential slot, it is only natural that the South East takes the national chairmanship position.

The statement continued “These are the three political tripods of the nation. Anything contrary to this will portray the APC as an Igbo hater.  Remember, Igbos are not just domiciled in the South East region alone. We are the only tribe that has presence across the federation and in Diaspora. APC stands to gain a lot if an Igbo heads the party machinery. And we are also convinced that Igbo presidency is realisable in APC in the near future than in the PDP

“An Igbo as APC national chairman will convince our kith and kin in Igboland that the APC is a not a Muslim party or a party that has no consideration for Igbos This is a golden opportunity for the APC to make in- road in the South East. The PDP has failed us. Igbos are only playing second fiddle in the PDP. None of the three key public offices such as the presidency, Vice and Senate president is occupied by the Igbo. So, for now the national chairmanship position will give Igbos a true sense of belonging in the APC” the statement stated.

The group warned that any position less than that of the national chairman will spell doom for the APC in the South East; as such action provides a huge opportunity for the PDP to gain electoral victory in the area.
