Mixed Reactions Trail Multi Million Naria Xmas Tree In Imo

BY UCHENNA UFONDU

Despite a biting economy and prevailing cash squeeze, Imolites appear to have divided opinion on the multi-million naira Christmas tree erected at the busy Owerri- Port Harcourt in the heart of the city. The beautiful decorations have elicited diverse reactions from the critical Imo citizenry.

“There is nothing wrong with the tree and the decorations in the city for the Christmas. It is done everywhere. If you go to other cities, you will see similar decorations” said Ositadinma Diwe, an Owerri resident.

A businessman, Rufus Ejeleonu said “Owerri now put a new look. It is a beautiful sight to behold when you go there. We must appreciate good things. Besides, it is a seasonal thing and we must learn to savour such beauty when we see them. There is nothing wrong if we savour the beauty of the Christmas tree”

However, the opposition has faulted the decorations accusing the State Governor, Rochas Okorocha of spending a mind blowing N600 million naria to decorate Owerri capital city for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to a former Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representative, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha in a statement, he said, “It is ridiculous and indeed smacks of insensitivity for this government to spend over N600 million on decorations when families can no longer afford their meals and basic needs as a result of non-payment of salaries, pensions and other entitlements.

Chief Vincent Osuji, a construction worker said the decorations are a waste of scarce resources and funds.

Hear him“We cannot be complaining of cash squeeze and the government is spending such amount of money on such frivolities. Are they really honest and sincere to us and our pain?

“The people are hungry. Nobody is happy in the State and we are hearing that such huge amount of money is spent on Christmas decorations. It is ridiculous.

“Where are the factories and industries we are promised.  Where are the jobs, jobs the governor promised during his re-election campaigns?

“Can’t N600 million build a factory that will employ thousands of unemployed youths in the State, why waste it on Christmas decorations" he queried

The beautiful Christmas tree has however attracted fun seekers from within and outside the State who throng the venue to catch a glimpse o it.
