In confirmation of INNONEWS.COM report yesterday(February 8th, 2016) that workers in Imo State will embark on strike tomorrow (February 9, 2016), labour leaders in the State have confirmed that all is now set for the strike/protest.

Labour leaders were said to have given out instructions to all their unit heads in all State government agencies, Ministries and all other formations to comply with the strike/protest.

It was unclear if it will be a warning strike as a source said the national leadership which is expected in the State today will give further directives on the duration of the strike.

One of the workers who this newspaper spoke on condition of anonymity said they have received clear instructions from their leaders to go on strike and gather at a secret location in town to take off for the protest.

“We are going on strike. We will also embark on protests. We advise residents in town to stockpile enough food stuffs and withdraw enough money from the banks” he said

At the Imo State House of Assembly, this newspaper learnt from some workers they were told to take all their personal belongings in their offices as no office will be open for work as from tommorow.

However, the State government has re- echoed its call to the Nigeria Labour Congress to shelve its planned strike and protest and take part in the 18 man committee to resolve the lingering dispute between government and labour.

The Committee is headed by Barr Ikenna Emeh, a former lawmaker in Imo State. The committee is made up of top government officials, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Chairman, Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers.

Labour is expected to be part of the committee with eight members. The inauguration of the committee was earlier scheduled for inauguration this morning (February 7th, 2016) but was rescheduled

According to Sir Jude Ejiogu, Secretary to the Government of Imo State, the committee will compare ideas, review and advise all issues pertaining the suspension of some workers in 19 parastatals and agencies rather for labour to dissipate energy on protests.

The State government has advised labour to forfeit the strike as opposition members may hire hoodlums to infiltrate the protests.

Meanwhile, this online newspaper observed that security agents have positioned themselves at entry points of state government establishments. At the Imo State House of Assembly, men of the Imo Security Network were sighted at the entrance gate of the complex.

Similar security personnel were noticed at the gate of the Imo State Secretariat.
