The Imo State government in a bid to compel workers in the State to shelve its planned strike and protest has constituted a top committee comprising senior state government officials, Chairmen of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Council of Traditional Rulers.

Terms of reference of the Committee is to interface with labour leaders in the State to resolve the ongoing feud with workers in the State. The Government implored labour leaders in the State to attend the inauguration of the committee with eight members

The Committee is to be inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Sir Jude Ejiogu on Tuesday, February 8th, 2016.

This newspaper was told that the committee was earlier scheduled for inauguration on Thursday, 3rd February, 2016 which labour leaders in the State refused to attend.

In a related development, a source told this newspaper that the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in Imo State has scheduled Wednesday, February 9, 2016 for its planned strike and protest

“ Workers will be clad in black attires and we will march peacefully along major roads in Owerri to  protest the sack of workers in 19 parastatals and the concession policy of the State government” the source said.

“People should stock their homes with food items, withdraw enough cash from the banks” he stated

Efforts to speak to the State Chairman of the NLC, Austin Chilakpu to confirm this piece of information was not successful.

Meanwhile, stern looking policemen were noticed along the Owerri- Port Harcourt road where the State Secretariat is located. The State secretariat is a huge complex where civil servants carry out their operations and duties.

However, tricycle operators in the State (Keke Operators) have pledged their support to the state government concession policy. In a statement, they said labour should count them out of their planned protest.
