If PDP Falters, Can It Retake Power In Imo State In 2019?

BY FRED IGWE

There is no doubt that the All Progressive Congress, APC led government in Imo State has failed. This therefore places a moral burden on the people of Imo State to search for an alternative political party that will truly rescue the State from the bondage of economic stagnation and impoverishment in the next political dispensation.

The PDP readily comes to mind when issues that borders who and which political party should take over the reins of governance of Imo State. Having governed the State for 12 years under Achike Udenwa and Ikedi Ohakim, can one really say that the party performed better compared to what we have seen from Rochas Okorocha in the last 6 years?

It is pertinent to say that the PDP in Imo State has what it takes to garner public support from the sophisticated Imo electorate between now and 2019 to win the next polls considering the flip flops of the Okorocha led APC administration.

The Okorocha government can be summarized in one word- discontent. Majority of the people of Imo State are totally disappointed in the second coming of the present administration.  From irregular payment of workers’ salaries to biting and ravaging hunger trespassing the nooks and crannies of the State, there is no doubt that the State is in dire need of authentic change.

Recently, the PDP leaders in Imo State  engaged themselves in measures to re organize the party to make it electable in 2019.  For the first time, it held open congresses to elect its party officers. But it is still sad that the party is allowing those tendencies that made the people of Imo to eject it out of power in 2011 to rear its ugly head again. If the party goes ahead to discard its zoning policy and allow another man from Orlu zone (Imo West Senatorial district) to fly the party’s governorship flag in 2019, then it has shot itself in the foot. This is the simple truth. It will simply pass a message to the people   that it is a party where bullshit works and anything happens!

The issue of zoning has become  an integral component of the PDP in Imo State and beyond and if  any selfish political consideration beclouds its sense of judgment it decides to turn the policy upside down, then the  PDP will not be seen as political party that has regards for its slogan which is justice and equity.

Imo State is in dire need of revival. Political parties like the PDP will be de- marketing itself before the electorate if goes ahead to introduce obnoxious policies such as disregarding the principle of zoning which has been an integral component of the party.

Besides, it still carries the scar of a corrupt political party. And it will only take positive actions on the part of the party leaders to re convince the electorate that it has turned to a new leaf .  To many, the PDP in Imo State remain a bunch of power gluttons, money seeking adventurers who are ready to sell their mothers for a pot of porridge. This is the stigma it carries in Imo. And only a holistic re branding by the leaders can change this perception about the party.

Imolites will like to see a new brand party with new ideas and innovations that will take the State out of the present woods it has found itself. As it stands, is it  the PDP in Imo State that will take the State on a new path of economic prosperity and happiness of the people?  A purge of old tendencies can just do the magic
