Men of the dreaded Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yesterday visited the Imo State House
of Assembly, Owerri.
The commission’s men whisked
to Abuja the Clerk of the Assembly, Barr. Chris Duru. There were also reports that officials of the commission
made attempts to also arrest the Speaker, Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumuogu and his
deputy, Donatus Ozoemena. There was no independent confirmation of this
development.
However, the EFCC’ s arrest
came barely 24 hours Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha told the visiting Good
Governance Team led by Information Minister, Labaran Maku that the anti graft agency
has refused to arrest and prosecute his predecessor, Ikedi Ohakim who misappropriated
billions of state funds
The arrest of the Clerk of
the House caused panic and frenzy at the Assembly complex, Owerri as lawmakers tactically
stayed away from the Assembly premises. The arrest of the House Clerk comes
barely a fortnight the anti graft agency arrested the Imo State Commissioner of
Finance and the State Accountant General.
When contacted for
comments, the Media aide to the Imo Speaker, Samuelson Iwuoha confirmed the
arrest saying it is normal for the anti graft agency to visit the House ,
stating that the arrest of the Clerk is a normal routine.
