Fierce
control for the State leadership of the All Progressive Congress, APC and the
second term ambition of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State were cumulative
factors which may have led to the stalemate of the party’s State congress.
Reports were rife in Owerri that the State congress to elect party executives was to be
held at Government House, Owerri, a development which forced other stakeholders
to protest and express their displeasure to the Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC).
On this basis, INEC was reported to have
ordered for the cancellation of the Congress.
Local tabloids
in Owerri also reported that those not on the same page with the Imo Governor
in the party may opt to decamp to another political party.
Governor
Okorocha , a fortnight ago removed the
Interim Chairman of the APC in the State, Chief Marshal Okoroaforanyanwu.
Hilary Eke, his ally was nominated the party chairman pending ratification at
the State congress.
Since then,
there have been rumbles in the party. Two of Governor Okorocha’s allies, Hon
Uche Onyeagocha and Senator Osita Izunaso are said to be disgust with the
actions of their principal.
Meanwhile, a
source in the party told this blog that Governor Okorocha’s second term
ambition is responsible for the arm twisting tactics employed by the Governor
to boost his chances of emerging the party’s governorship candidate in Imo State.
“This was
why Okoroaforanyanwu was kicked out. He is from Orlu Zone, Okorocha’s geo
political zone. There is no way the Governor and the State Chairman can come
from the same zone. So, Marshal had to take the boot” the source added.
While a new
date for the congress has not been announced, feelers emerged that aggrieved
persons in Imo APC over the botched State Congress have been referred to the
Appeal Panel. This is contrary to newspaper reports that the national
leadership is furious with the Imo State Governor over the manner the congress
was held.
The Appeal
Panel is to receive and adjudicate on matters concerning ward, local Government
and State Congresses.
