Fireworks are expected at the APC
Northern Caucus Meeting. The meeting was to be held last Friday night but was put
off and has been shifted to tomorrow (Monday, June2, 2014).
No reason was given for the shift,
but a source said it is to ensure that all stakeholders of the party in the
region attend the meeting in Abuja.
This is coming on the heels of intrigues;
political maneuvering that has rocked the All Progressive Congress, APC as its
national convention draws near. It is
expected to hold between 13- 14 June this year.
It will be recalled that the Imo
State Governor, Rochas Okorocha set the ball rolling when he aligned with the
South- South to produce the national chairman of the party, a move that has surprised
stakeholders of the party in the South East who are rooting for Dr. Ogbonnaya
Onu to clinch the exalted position being the sole candidate of the zone.
In turn, Okorocha is believed to be
nursing a Vice Presidential ambition as the party is expected to zone its presidential
ticket to the North.
Pundits say Okorocha’s action is
selfish and a deliberate attempt to scuttle the chances of Dr. Onu who was one
of the founders of the APC. Okorocha joined without a political party, as the
APGA he belonged to refused to be part of the merger which gave birth to the
APC.
Inside sources close to the APC
Northern Caucus revealed that fireworks are expected at the meeting with
majority of them insisting that the National Chairmanship position be zoned to
the South East to cement the age old bond between the North and the East as
well as strengthen the party in the zone.
The source also hinted that the North
sees no electoral value in zoning the position to the South South as President
Goodluck Jonathan will make a clean sweep of the zone in the 2015 general
elections being a son of the soil from the area.
It was gathered that the Northern
bloc of the party is considering picking a running mate from the South West which
has five State Governors on the party’s platform. It is expected that the North
will produce the presidential candidate of the party.
