As the national convention of the All
Progressive Congress, APC draws near, the Northern Caucus of the party have
rejected the unilateral decision of Imo State Governor and Chairman, APC Governors
Forum, Rochas Okorocha to zone the party’s national Chairman slot to the South South
zone.
Okorocha had come on the spotlight recently
when he alongside some APC leaders in the South South met at Government House,
Owerri where they zoned the party’s national chairmanship seat to the area
The Imo State Governor’s move was seen by
pundits as a ploy to scheme for the party’s Vice Presidential slot at the expense
of betraying the uniamous decision of APC stakeholders in the South East who
are carving for the party’s national chairmanship position.
At the APC Northern caucus meeting held in
Abuja, a source told this blog that a five man committee headed by Alhaji Maina
and Nelson Allappa, Chairman and Secretary of the committee met for 48 hours
and turned in a report that was at variance with the position of the Imo
Governor and co.
After extensive deliberations on the report,
the Northern Caucus rather proposed that the South comprising the South East,
the South West and the South South should produce the party’s national
chairman.
It however demanded that the post of National
Secretary should be conceded to the North East.
It will be recalled that one of the leaders
of the party from the South East and
former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Ogbonnya Onu had signaled interest in the
national chairmanship position of the APC and perhaps was banking on the
support of the Imo Governor who surprisingly made a u- turn at the last minute.
With less than a week to the national
convention, the APC is still locked in serious political manoveuring as key
players in the party strategize to
ensure the party does not go up in smoke after its national convention.
