This online newspaper
had reported that some workers in some state agencies were laid off via a a
statement from the office of Secretary to the Government of Imo State aired by
state run radio, Orient last saturday.
Speaking at a popular radio programme on Owerri based private station HOTFM, the Special Adviser to Imo State Governor on Information and
Strategy, Kelechi Okpaleke said workers in the affected agencies were only
suspended and not sacked.
He said none of the
agencies were scrapped by the State government as plans are underway to
concession them to private hands.
Okpaleke pointed out
that the falling monthly revenue from the Federation Account was dropping, revealing
that last month the State received a meager N1.4 billion naira as allocation.
He said the State
government cannot cope with the monthly N4.2 billion naira wage bill of Imo
workers, stressing that based on the current economic downturn in the country,
there is need for new ideas to manage the State.
