The whirlwind blowing across
the APC in Imo State has gained more ferocity with reports that senator Matthew
Omegara, senator representing Okigwe zone and State party Chairman, Marshal Okaforanyanwu
have decamped to the PDP.
The Member representing Owerri
Federal Constituency, Hon Ezenwa Onyewuchi, announced his defection to the PDP
at the PDP zonal rally held in Enugu and attended by President Goodluck
Jonathan. He had quit the party last week.
Efforts to speak to Omegara
for confirmation were futile at press time, but indications became clearer at the weekend that
the senator has switched to the PDP.
The senator had being an ally
of the Imo State Governor but changed his political direction to strengthen his
chances of returning for a second term as senator. Omegara may have left the
APC on the basis that Okorocha may be disposed to back the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Benjamin Uwajumougu for Okigwe senatorial position.
Next on the line of defection
is the APC State party Chairman, Marshal Okoaforanyanwu.
Marshal’s defection has been
in the news for a long time though there were conflicting reports that he was
persuaded to stay back in the party. He however lost faith with the APC
when the party’s chairmanship position was zoned to Owerri zone ostensibly to
balance the political equation in the party which will oil the aspiration of
Governor Rochas Okorocha who comes from Orlu zone.
The position however became clearer yesterday
when reports filtered in that he has left the APC for PDP.
Meanwhile, the APC leadership
rose to halt the defections of its key members. Governor Okorocha was said to be involved in a marathon meeting with APC stalwarts and
chieftains last night at Government House, Owerri. Details of the meeting was
sketchy.
